Insurance Rates

When I got in to my car accident last January (I spun out on the ice and hit a guard-rail and nearly totaled my car) my car insurance didn’t go up.  When I got in to my previous accidents, not only did I get tickets but my car insurance went up a lot.  What is it that makes it go up when you get in an accident?  Is it the ticket factor or does it have to do with something else?
